What is Shingles?

What is shingles? Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is an infection caused by a re-activated version of the varicella-zoster virus that causes chickenpox. It can also cause severe pain and can stretch sensitive nerves. It usually causes localized pain, burning sensations, itchiness, and the appearance of small, round blisters along a nerve line on one side of your body. The blisters usually appear on the face, back, and neck.

Shingles causes a wide array of symptoms including burning sensations, itchy rash, fever, and muscle or joint aches. In addition, other symptoms include muscle weakness and spasms, photosensitivity, memory loss, and night sweats. However, the exact cause of this condition has not yet been identified. Some studies have shown that shingles may be triggered by infection with the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Other studies have shown that shingles may be triggered by exposure to an object that irritates the skin, such as a needle or other sharp instrument.

There are several symptoms that have been associated with this condition. The most common symptom is a red rash around the face, which can be either painless or agonizing. On one side, the rash will be raised, but will often times spread to the neck or shoulders. Blisters will likely form along the effected area. The pain and discomfort from this condition are often described as being one of aching.

In addition to a red rash, symptoms can also include itching and watering of the eyes, difficulty of tears, pain in the eye region, loss of vision, pain when eating or opening the eyes, and a feeling of numbness or tingling in the hands. On one occasion, the head pain was so severe that it woke up the whole family. About one week after developing shingles, the family experienced severe swelling of their legs. About two weeks after developing these symptoms, the legs no longer felt tender. The condition has also been known to affect the lungs, kidneys, heart, nerves, and other internal organs.

A typical symptom of shingles rash is one side of a leg or body part becoming unusually tender. One side may even have a very visible rash. As a result, many people opt to take 1,000 mg of Methyl Salicylate (MS) per dose. This drug is usually prescribed for blisters that do not heal after three to five days. If one side only has one or more of these symptoms, it is best not to take a higher dose. If one side has two or more of these symptoms, one should call their doctor immediately in order to increase the dosage.

If one has any of these symptoms, they should contact their doctor as soon as possible in order to get shingles treatment. The doctor will be able to recommend the best over the counter cream for shingles. If a person is interested in non-pharmaceutical shingles treatment options, they should look into acyclovir and valacyclovir. These two antiviral drugs are the only ones that have been proven to prevent the virus from coming back. The acyclovir and valacyclovir are taken orally and can cause serious side effects if taken for extended periods of time. The person taking these drugs must be monitored closely by their physician in order to make sure the side effects do not become serious. If an individual has developed an allergic reaction to one or more of the antiviral drugs, it could cause serious complications.

If a patient has severe pain from their rashes, it is imperative that they visit their doctor immediately. Some of the symptoms of shingles include severe pain, headache, fever, muscle and joint pain, and skin rash. These symptoms can be very severe and cause people to lose control of their day to day lives.

A person may also experience blistering, itching, burning, redness, blisters, fluid accumulation, and dimples. It is usually best to consult with a doctor first before trying to treat themselves at home. If a person is experiencing these symptoms, they should look into the possibility of shingles and see if they have developed these symptoms before. They can then decide if they want to pursue a medical solution or if they prefer to try a home remedy first.
